Aliam - Alan Cumming & Miriam Margoyles
This tartan was created in the name of Alan Cumming and Miriam Margoyles to celebrate their 2021 ‘Lost in Scotland’ tour spent reconnecting with their roots… and visiting our mill being part of it. Aliam is a weaving together of their names, which reflects the warp and weft of a tartan cloth.
The threadcount consists of Alan and Miriam’s birth years ’65 and ’41 along with 19 for the century. Also 45 threads make up the check, with 5 green threads surrounded by 20 blue on either side. This number is for various reasons all of which relate to their shared passion for Scotland and the important causes that unite them.
The colours are a tribute to their lives and spirit. For Miriam, there’s turmeric yellow depicting the land and soil of her other homeland Australia, dark blue for its connotations with the Jewish festival Hanukkah and the sapphic lavender lilac for its association with lesbianism. For Alan, the green portrays the country forest estate that he grew up on which was a destination on their tour, and yellow simply because it is his favourite colour. The pale pink is for both figures, representing something that unites them… lustfulness!
